Cetate

The fortress quarter, and the reason people come. Three squares in a line, the Opera, the Art Museum, the Bega quays and the brick bastion — all inside a flat kilometre you can cross in twenty minutes.

Two minutes on Cetate

Cetate is the old walled town, rebuilt by the Habsburgs after 1716 on a grid that still holds. The walls came down in 1892, which is why the quarter has a clear edge but no visible fortress except the Theresia bastion on its eastern side.

Everything a first visit wants is inside it: Piața Unirii with its Catholic dome and Serbian cathedral, Piața Libertății with the old town hall, Piața Victoriei with the Opera at one end and the Orthodox Cathedral at the other. The Bega runs along the southern edge with a path on both banks.

Through the year

Cetate is a terrace quarter, so spring and autumn are its best months: April to mid-June and September to mid-October, when the squares have chairs out and the light hits the facades in the late afternoon.

July and August are around 30°C with very little shade between the buildings — mornings and evenings only. December brings the Christmas market to Piața Victoriei and the revolution commemorations to the same pavements; it is cold, grey and the most Timișoara time of year.

Where to sleep inside the quarter

Rates cluster tightly: about €55 for a midweek three-star double and €75–95 for four-star, checked September 2026. Anything advertised under €40 inside Cetate is usually a room in a converted flat with a shared stair — fine, but read the description.

Two practical notes. Parking inside the ring is metered and scarce, so if you are driving, price a hotel with a garage or stay in Circumvalațiunii. And ask for a courtyard room on Piața Unirii: the square has music until midnight from Thursday on.

Getting in and out

Tram 1 and 2 run the ring; trolleybuses cross it. A ticket is bought in the app or from the kiosk before boarding, and a day pass is the sensible buy if you plan more than three rides. Traian Vuia airport is 12 km north-east — the express bus takes 35 minutes and drops in Piața Libertății.

On foot, Iosefin is 18 minutes west, Elisabetin 15 minutes south and Fabric 22 minutes east across the Bega. Nothing in the centre justifies a taxi unless it is raining.
