Day one
Fabric and the Secession edge
Fabric holds the densest run of Secession and eclectic façades in the city. Start early on Bulevardul 3 August 1919, where the plane trees thin the light and the plasterwork stays in shadow until mid-morning. The streets here are wide because the district was laid out for industry and commerce, not for show, which makes the ornament feel almost accidental. Walk west, then turn south into the grid of smaller streets behind the boulevard.

Piața Traian
A broad square with a mix of late-eclectic and Secession fronts. Stand in the middle and turn slowly; the corner buildings carry the best tile and stucco work.

Walk the length of this boulevard. Look above the shopfronts: curved gables, oval windows, floral reliefs in pale green and ochre. The rhythm is residential above, commercial below.

Fabric Synagogue
A Moorish-revival building with a prominent dome and arched windows, set back from the street. Check opening hours locally; when open it is quiet and worth twenty minutes.

Strada Ștefan cel Mare
Narrower and more domestic. Several houses have Secession doorways with stained glass above. Keep to the pavement and look at ground-floor ironwork.

Piața Romanilor
A smaller square that divides Fabric from the centre. Good for a pause; there are benches and a few shops. The architecture here is plainer but still of the period.

Lunch near Piața Romanilor
Several small restaurants serve daily menus. Look for ciorbă and grilled meats; prices are lower than in Cetate. Expect to pay around 35–45 lei for a full plate.

Day one, afternoon
Iosefin and the inner ring
Cross into Iosefin via Bulevardul 16 Decembrie 1989, which runs straight and busy towards the centre. Iosefin is more mixed: villas, factories, and churches sit close together. The Secession here is less uniform than in Fabric, so you have to look harder, but the rewards are individual buildings with strong character. End the afternoon on the edge of Cetate, where the scale changes.

A long approach road. Watch for the corner building with a curved bay and floral iron balconies. The traffic is heavy; walk on the shaded side.

A quieter street with several Secession houses. Number 18 has a fine arched entry and original tiles in the hallway, visible from the street when the door is open.

A small square with a church and a few trees. The surrounding buildings are eclectic with Secession details. A good place to sit and compare façades.

Runs towards the centre. Look for the pale blue house with an oval window and wrought-iron balcony. The street is short but dense with period detail.

A large fountain with a statue of Neptune, set in a paved square. In the evening the light catches the water. A natural meeting point and a good end to the day.

A historic beer hall on the square. Order a draft and a simple plate. The interior is plain, the terrace lively. Expect around 25 lei for a beer and snack.

Day two
Cetate: squares and public interiors
Cetate is the old commercial core, with three linked squares and a concentration of Secession and eclectic buildings that are easy to see on foot. Sunday morning is quiet; many shops are shut, which makes the façades easier to read. Start in Piața Unirii, work through Piața Libertății, and finish in Piața Victoriei. The distances are short, so you can afford to linger.

The main square. Look at the corner buildings: the one with the green tiled roof and the one opposite with a curved gable. The mix of Baroque, eclectic and Secession is typical of the city.

Strada Mercy
A short pedestrian street linking the squares. The buildings here have been restored; note the stucco ceilings visible through open doorways. Keep to the public parts.

The widest square. The Opera house is a large eclectic building; the surrounding blocks have Secession details. Walk the full length to appreciate the scale.

Public interior: the Opera foyer
When there is no rehearsal, the foyer is sometimes open to visitors. Check at the box office. The staircase and ceiling are worth ten minutes. Free when accessible.

Day two, afternoon
Cetate edges and the synagogue
Spend the afternoon on the edges of Cetate, where the Secession gives way to plainer nineteenth-century blocks, and then return to the Fabric Synagogue if you missed it on day one. This is a slower stretch with fewer set pieces, but it fills in the picture of how the city grew. Finish with a walk along the Bega and a last look at the Neptune fountain.

A street running north from Piața Unirii. Several buildings have Secession doorways and original shopfronts. The street is quiet on Sundays.

Walk the path along the river. The water is calm, the banks are lined with trees, and you get a different view of the city's backs. Good for a slow half-hour.
