Buying tickets and passes
Timișoara's public transport is run by STPT, and it is cheap, frequent and generally reliable. You cannot buy a ticket from the driver on most vehicles, so sort this out before you board. The easiest option for a short stay is a day pass, but single tickets are fine if you are only making a couple of trips.

Find a kiosk or use the app
Tickets are sold at STPT kiosks near the big stops, at some corner shops, and via the 24pay app or the STPT app. The app is the least fuss: buy, activate, show the QR code when you board. Kiosks are not everywhere, and they close in the evening, so do not rely on finding one at 23:00.

Buy a single ticket
A single ticket costs 4 lei and is valid for one journey on one line, including transfers within 60 minutes if you validate it correctly. You must validate it in the machine on board — the orange boxes. If you do not, you are riding without a ticket, and inspectors do patrol.

Consider a day pass
A day pass costs 15 lei and gives unlimited travel on all trams, trolleybuses and buses until midnight. If you plan more than three trips in a day — say, a morning in Fabric, afternoon in Iosefin, evening back to the centre — it pays for itself. A 7-day pass is 50 lei, a monthly pass 120 lei.

Validate correctly
On trams and buses, you validate your paper ticket in the orange machine at the front or rear doors. If you have an app ticket, activate it before boarding and show the screen. Inspectors wear plain clothes and fine on the spot; the fine is 100 lei. Do not try to dodge it — it is not worth the hassle.

By tram
Trams, trolleybuses and buses
Timișoara's tram network is the backbone: six lines, mostly modern low-floor vehicles on the main routes, with a few older ones still around. Trams are fastest for north-south and east-west crossings. Trolleybuses fill in the gaps, and buses serve the outer estates. For a visitor, lines 1, 2, 4 and 8 are the useful ones.

Tram 1: Gara de Nord to Piața Libertății
If you arrive by train, tram 1 or 2 from Gara de Nord takes you into the centre in about 10 minutes. Get off at Piața Libertății for the Baroque square, or stay on one more stop for Piața Victoriei. Trams run every 7–10 minutes during the day.

Tram 4: Piața Libertății to Calea Aradului
Line 4 heads north towards the Arad road and the Iulius Mall. It is useful if you are going to the shopping centre or the business district. The trams on this line are often older and noisier, but they run frequently.

Trolleybus 16: Piața Victoriei to Fabric
Trolleybus 16 connects the centre to the Fabric district, crossing the Bega and passing near the Maria Theresia Bastion. It is a quick way to reach the Fabric Synagogue and the old factories. Runs every 10–15 minutes.

Tram 2: Piața Victoriei to Piața Traian
Line 2 goes east to Piața Traian, the heart of Fabric. From there you can walk to the Bega embankment and the Fabric Park. This is a good route if you want to see a different side of the city without going far.

Bus 33: Piața Libertății to Iosefin
Bus 33 runs from the centre to the Iosefin quarter, passing the Iosefin Synagogue and the old water tower. It is a short ride but saves a 25-minute walk if you are pressed for time.

By air
The airport express and other connections
Timișoara Traian Vuia International Airport is 10 km east of the city, near the village of Ghiroda. There is no train link. The express bus 4 connects the airport to the city centre, and it is cheap and reasonably frequent. Taxis are plentiful but you need to know which company to call.

Express bus 4 from the airport
Bus 4 runs from the airport to Piața Libertății via Piața Victoriei. The journey takes about 25 minutes in normal traffic. Buses run every 15–20 minutes from around 05:30 to 23:00. Buy a ticket from the kiosk in the arrivals hall or use the app; you cannot buy on board.

Taxi from the airport
A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs around 40–50 lei, depending on traffic. Use a reputable company: Taxi Timișoara (0256 940) or Radio Taxi (0256 111). Avoid the drivers who approach you inside the terminal; they charge double. The official taxi rank is outside arrivals.

Ride-sharing apps
Uber and Bolt operate in Timișoara. A ride from the airport to the centre is usually 35–45 lei. The pick-up point is the same as the taxi rank. This can be cheaper and easier if you have data, but surge pricing applies at peak times.

Train from Gara de Nord
If you are coming from another Romanian city, trains arrive at Gara de Nord, which is a 15-minute walk or a short tram ride from the centre. The station is not the airport; do not confuse them. From Gara de Nord, tram 1 or 2 takes you to Piața Libertății.

On foot and by bike
Walking times and the Bega path
Central Timișoara is compact and flat, and walking is often the best way to get around. The Bega river cuts through the city, and its embankments have been turned into a long linear park with a dedicated cycle path. Cycling is popular and increasingly well catered for, though you still share some roads with traffic.

Piața Victoriei to Piața Unirii
The walk from Piața Victoriei to Piața Unirii along the pedestrianised street takes about 10 minutes at a normal pace. It is flat and lined with cafés and shops. You pass the Opera House and the Hunyadi Castle on the way.

Piața Unirii to Piața Libertății
This is a 5-minute walk through the Baroque square and under thefisherman's bastion. You can also cut through the small park. It is entirely pedestrianised.

Piața Libertății to Fabric
Walking from Piața Libertății to the Fabric district takes about 25 minutes, crossing the Bega on the Decebal Bridge. Alternatively, take tram 2. If you walk, you pass the Maria Theresia Bastion and the Bega embankment.

Cycle path along the Bega
The Bega cycle path runs from the city centre east to the village of Ghiroda and west towards Sânmihaiu Român. It is flat, paved, and mostly traffic-free. You can rent a bike from one of the rental stations in the centre; expect to pay around 10 lei per hour. The full path is about 10 km each way.

Walking in the heat
In July and August, the central squares have little shade, and temperatures can reach 35°C. Walk early or late, and plan stops in air-conditioned museums or cafés. Piața Victoriei is particularly exposed; Piața Unirii has some shade from buildings.

By taxi
When a taxi is worth it
Taxis in Timișoara are cheap by Western European standards, and for groups or in bad weather they can be worth it. But you need to call a reputable company or use an app; hailing one on the street can lead to inflated prices. The fare is metered, and you should insist on the meter.

Late night from the centre
After midnight, trams and buses stop running. A taxi is the only practical option. From Piața Victoriei to most central hotels costs 15–25 lei. Call T taxi Timișoara (0256 940) or use Bolt. Do not walk alone in poorly lit areas if you can avoid it.

If you have heavy bags or an early flight, a taxi to the airport is easier than the bus. From the centre it costs 40–50 lei and takes 15–25 minutes. Allow extra time during rush hour. Bolt is often cheaper.

Timișoara gets sudden summer downpours. If you are stuck in a café and need to get across town, a taxi is worth the 20 lei. The tram will be crowded, and walking will soak you. Use the app to avoid standing on the street.

Taxis to outlying areas
For destinations like the Village Museum or the Mehala district, buses exist but can be slow and infrequent. A taxi from the centre costs 25–35 lei. Call ahead or use an app; there are not many taxis cruising those areas.
