Stage one
Piața Traian and the old factory gates
Begin at Piața Traian, the civic heart of Fabric. The square is ringed by late nineteenth-century buildings with secessionist flourishes and a few stubbornly plain commercial blocks. Look for the corner where Strada Ștefan cel Mare meets the piața: the curving facade with the green-tiled roof is a good example of the district's confidence before the First World War.

Piața Traian
Start under the trees in the square's centre. The nearby Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe is a low, barrel-vaulted Orthodox church that predates the grander buildings around it. Note the mix of shoppers and commuters: this is still a working square, not a museum piece.

Former Standard shoe factory
Walk north along Strada Ștefan cel Mare. The long brick range on your right, now subdivided into workshops and small offices, was once the Standard shoe factory. The tall, round-arched windows and the iron tie-rods are original. You cannot go inside, but the gate is usually open enough for a look at the inner courtyard.

Coffee at a local café
There are few dedicated coffee places in this immediate area. One reliable option is a small café on Strada Ștefan cel Mare, near the intersection with Strada Gheorghe Doja. It has a few pavement tables. Order an espresso or a flat white; the pastries are decent but not the point.

Strada Ștefan cel Mare streetscape
Continue north-east. The street is a catalogue of Fabric's commercial architecture: ornate stucco on some facades, bare brick on others, and a few examples of interwar modernism squeezed in between. Look up at the first-floor balconies and the carved door surrounds.
Stage two
The industrial spine and the Neptune fountain
This stage takes you through the area where Fabric's industrial past is most visible. You will pass the remains of the old factories and end at the Neptune fountain, a civic monument that once marked the entrance to the industrial zone. The scale here is larger, the streets wider, and the buildings more utilitarian.

Former ILSA wool factory
The sprawling complex on Bulevardul 3 August 1919 is a monument to early twentieth-century industry. The main gate is monumental, with rusticated stonework. Inside, the buildings are now rented out to various businesses. From the street you can see the sawtooth roofs of the weaving sheds.

Bega embankment
Cross to the canal side and walk east along the embankment. The Bega is not a pretty river here, but it is honest: concrete banks, graffiti, and the occasional fisherman. The water moves slowly. Look across to the opposite bank for a clear view of the factory backs and the old loading docks.

Neptune fountain
The fountain stands in a small square at the junction of Bulevardul 3 August 1919 and Strada Gheorghe Doja. It was unveiled in 1889 and restored relatively recently. Neptune sits on a rock, trident in hand, surrounded by smaller figures. The basin is often dry in summer, but the statue itself is worth a few minutes.

Lunch stop
There are a few simple eateries near the fountain: a bakery with sandwiches, a pizza place, and a canteen-style restaurant on the boulevard. None are fancy. Expect to pay around 20–30 lei for a filling lunch. If the weather is fine, take it to the small park behind the fountain.

Stage three
Churches and the quieter streets
After lunch, turn inland towards the churches that give Fabric its spiritual anchors. This section is more residential and calmer, with a couple of handsome places of worship and some fine domestic architecture. The pace slows, and you can hear birds over the traffic.

Biserica Millennium
This Roman Catholic church on Piața Romanilor is a neo-Gothic structure with a tall, slender spire. It was built in the late nineteenth century for the German-speaking Catholic community. The interior is cool and dim, with stained glass and a carved wooden altar. Check the opening times on the door; it is usually open in the mornings and late afternoons.

Biserica Sfânta Maria
A short walk away, this Orthodox church is smaller and more intimate. The exterior is plain, but the interior is brightly painted in the Orthodox style. Women should cover their heads; there are usually scarves by the door. It is an active parish, so be respectful if a service is in progress.

Strada Ion Luca Caragiale
Walk west along this street to see some of the best-preserved villas in Fabric. Many date from the 1900s and have elaborate porches, wooden shutters, and small front gardens. Some are still single-family homes; others have been divided into flats. Look for the numbers 10–20 on the north side.

Coffee and cake
There is a café on Strada Ion Luca Caragiale that serves good coffee and simple cakes. It has a small courtyard at the back. This is a good place to rest and write notes. A cappuccino and a slice of cake will cost around 15–20 lei.

Stage four
Bega embankment and return
The final stage loops back to the Bega and follows it west towards the city centre. This is a pleasant walk in the late afternoon, with the light on the water and the factories silhouetted against the sky. You will end near the Piața Traian, closing the circle.

Bega footbridge
Cross the canal on the footbridge near Strada Gheorghe Doja. From the middle of the bridge you get a good view east along the Bega, with the industrial buildings on both sides. It is a favourite spot for photographers at sunset.

Embankment walk west
Turn right and follow the embankment west. The path is paved and popular with joggers and cyclists. On your left are the backs of the Fabric factories; on your right, the water. There are a few benches. This stretch is about one kilometre long.

Podul Mihai Viteazul
This bridge carries the boulevard over the Bega. Pause here to look back east at the industrial skyline and the Neptune fountain area in the distance. The bridge itself is a straightforward modern structure, but the view is the attraction.

Return to Piața Traian
Walk south from the bridge along Bulevardul 3 August 1919 until you reach Piața Traian again. By now the square is busy with evening shoppers. If you want a final drink, the cafés around the piața are open. This is the end of the walk.
