FABRIC FROM €48

Fabric

Fabric is the old factory quarter on the north bank of the Bega, where the Timișoreana brewery has stood since 1718. It is cheaper than the centre — median €48 a night, September 2026 — but you trade polish for character, and you will walk or take the tram to the sights.

Who should stay here

Fabric suits travellers who want the old industrial Timișoara rather than the polished squares. This is the quarter on the north bank of the Bega where the Timișoreana brewery has stood since 1718, where Piața Traian opens onto peeling Secession blocks, and where the streets still carry the names of trades. If you like your cities with a bit of grit and a lot of history, and you do not mind walking or taking a tram to the centre, this is your district.

It is a good base for two kinds of visitor. The first is the long-stay guest who wants an apartment with a kitchen at a lower monthly rate than Cetate or Iosefin. The second is the budget-conscious tourist who would rather spend on food and museums than on a hotel in the centre. If you are here for the breweries, the Bega promenade, or the student life around Piața Traian, Fabric puts you in the middle of it.

Families with small children might find the traffic on the main arteries heavy and the pavements uneven in places. Light sleepers should avoid rooms directly on Bulevardul 3 August 1919 or Strada Circumvalațiunii, where trams and lorries start early. But if you are willing to trade a little polish for character, and you want to see a part of the city that is changing quickly, Fabric rewards you.

What it costs

The median midweek double in Fabric was about EUR 48 a night in September 2026. That is roughly a third less than a comparable room in Cetate, the historic centre. Prices range from about EUR 35 a night for a basic double in a older block to about EUR 90 a night for a modern apartment with air conditioning and parking. Weekend rates can rise by 10–15 percent when there is a festival or a match at the stadium. If you are staying a week or more, many apartments drop to about EUR 40 a night, September 2026.

For that money you typically get a room in a converted apartment or a small guesthouse, not a full-service hotel. En-suite bathrooms are standard in the newer listings, but some of the cheapest rooms share a bathroom. Air conditioning is not universal in the older buildings, which matters in July and August. Parking, where available, adds about EUR 5–10 a night. A few places near Piața Traian charge a premium for the location, but most are priced for locals, not tourists.

Compared with other districts, Fabric is cheaper than Cetate and Iosefin, similar to Elisabetin, and slightly more expensive than the outskirts. You get more space for your money here: a studio apartment in Fabric often costs the same as a single room in the centre. But check the exact address: a few streets on the eastern edge are still rough, and the lowest rates often reflect that.

Getting to the rest of the city

Fabric is across the Bega from the centre, connected by four bridges. The walk to Piața Victoriei, the main square, takes 15–20 minutes from Piața Traian. To Piața Unirii, the heart of Cetate, it is 20–25 minutes. The riverside path along the Bega is flat and pleasant, and you can walk or cycle it. If you are going to the train station, Gara de Nord, it is a 25-minute walk or a short tram ride.

Public transport is frequent. Trams 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9 cross the quarter, and several bus lines run along Bulevardul 3 August 1919. A single ticket costs about 3 lei (EUR 0.60) from a kiosk, or 4 lei on board. A day pass is 10 lei (EUR 2), September 2026. The trams run from about 5am to 11pm. At night, buses are less frequent, and you may end up walking. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are cheap: a trip to the centre is about 15–20 lei (EUR 3–4), and to the airport about 40–50 lei (EUR 8–10).

Cycling is a good option. The Bega towpath is part of a longer route, and there are bike racks at most major buildings. But be aware that some streets are cobbled, and tram tracks can be slippery when wet. If you are driving, the main arteries get congested at rush hour, and parking near Piața Traian is limited. Most accommodation in Fabric does not have its own car park, so you will be looking for street parking, which is metered in some zones.

What is against it

The most serious drawback is noise. Bulevardul 3 August 1919 and Strada Circumvalațiunii carry constant traffic, including lorries and trams that run from before dawn until after midnight. If your room faces the street, you will hear it. The trams are particularly loud on the cobbled sections, and the old windows do little to block the sound. Light sleepers should ask for a room at the back or bring earplugs. On weekends, the bars around Piața Traian can be noisy until 2 or 3am.

Parts of Fabric are still rough. The area around the eastern end of Bulevardul 3 August 1919, near the Gara de Est, has a reputation for petty crime and street drinking. It is not dangerous in the way of a no-go zone, but it is not pretty, and you would not want to walk there alone late at night. Some of the cheapest rooms are in these blocks. The quarter is gentrifying, but it is not gentrified. You will see dilapidated buildings, graffiti, and uneven pavements that flood after heavy rain.

The centre is not on your doorstep. You will walk 15–20 minutes to the first sights, and more to the museums and restaurants of Cetate. That is fine in summer, but in winter the wind off the Bega makes it feel longer. There is also not much to do in Fabric itself: a few cafes, a market, and the brewery, but no cinema or theatre. For evening entertainment you will likely go across the river. And if you have a car, parking is a daily problem: most streets have limited spaces, and some are reserved for residents. You may end up paying for a garage or leaving the car a long way from your bed.

Frequently asked about staying in Fabric

How much does a room in Fabric cost, and what makes the price go up or down? In September 2026, the median midweek double was about €48 a night. Prices start around €35 for a basic double in an older block and go up to roughly €90 for a modern apartment with air conditioning and parking. Rates rise by 10–15 percent at weekends when there’s a festival or a stadium match, and drop to around €40 a night for stays of a week or more.
Is Fabric a good base for a first trip to Timișoara? It can be, if you don’t mind being a tram ride or a 20-minute walk from the centre. You’ll save on accommodation and get more space, but you’ll trade the convenience of stepping out into Piața Victoriei. For a short first visit focused on the main sights, staying in Cetate is simpler, but Fabric works if you’re happy to commute.
How noisy is Fabric, and where should I avoid booking if I’m a light sleeper? Noise is a real issue on the main arteries. Rooms directly on Bulevardul 3 August 1919 or Strada Circumvalațiunii suffer from trams and lorries starting early. If you’re sensitive to noise, choose a side street or an inner courtyard room. The area around Piața Traian is generally quieter at night, but student life can bring late-night revelry.
What’s parking like, and how do I get around without a car? Parking is limited and often costs €5–10 a night where available. Many older buildings have no dedicated parking. Fortunately, Fabric is well served by trams and buses; several lines run along the main boulevards into the centre. A car is not necessary and can be a liability due to traffic and parking.
Who should definitely not stay in Fabric? If you want polished surroundings, a full-service hotel, or everything within walking distance, look elsewhere. Families with small children may struggle with heavy traffic and uneven pavements. Also, if you need air conditioning in summer, check listings carefully—many older buildings lack it.
What’s the story with the breweries in Fabric, and can I visit them? Fabric is home to the Timișoreana brewery, which has operated since 1718. While the main brewery isn’t generally open for public tours, several craft beer bars and taprooms in the district celebrate that heritage. It’s a unique aspect of Fabric that you won’t find in the same way in other quarters.
