About Lugoj, in brief

Lugoj is for the traveller who wants a real Banat town rather than a Timișoara suburb. It is the second town of Timiș county, 60 km east of the city on the Timiș river, and it has its own baroque centre, the Iron Bridge over the Timiș, two cathedrals facing each other across the main square, and the birth house of the composer Ion Vidu. If you are here for the Banat hills — the wooded ridges that rise north of town towards Coșteiu and the vineyard country around Recaș — Lugoj is the obvious base. It is also a sensible stop for anyone driving between Timișoara and Deva, or between the Mureș valley and the Danube, who wants a night that is not a motorway service station.

Lugoj is small enough that you can walk from one end of the centre to the other in 20 minutes. The main square, Piața Iosif Constantin Drăgan, with the two cathedrals, the town hall and the Ion Vidu house, is the natural centre, and most of the bookable properties are within 500 metres of it. The railway station is on the south side of the Timiș, about 1.5 km from the square — a 20‑minute walk or a short taxi ride. Trains run regularly to Timișoara (about 1 hour 15 minutes) and to Deva and Arad; the station is small and easy, but there is no left luggage and the last trains to Timișoara leave before 9 p.m. The bus station is closer to the centre, near the Iron Bridge, with minibuses to Timișoara and to the villages along the Timiș valley. If you are coming by car, the DN6 and the A1 motorway are both within a few kilometres; the A1 exit for Lugoj is at Balinț, about 8 km north of town.

The full guide to the quarter, with what it costs and what is against it, is on the Lugoj page.

Things to know, from the quarter guide:

01 Many properties in Lugoj do not appear on international booking sites; call or email directly, in Romanian or German, for the best rate.
02 Ask specifically about air conditioning and about parking, because neither is guaranteed in the old centre.
03 If you are arriving by train, book a place within 500 metres of Piața Iosif Constantin Drăgan to avoid a long walk with luggage.
04 September is festival month in Lugoj; book at least three weeks ahead if you want a room in the centre.

Good to know before you book

Cobbles are the usual surprise in the centre: wheeled cases rattle and heels suffer. Most museums close on Monday. Terraces take cards; the markets and the bakeries prefer cash.

Coming in by tram is straightforward, but buy the ticket in the app or at the kiosk before you board — you cannot pay the driver.

Where our data comes from

This page is built from the booking catalogue, not from a visit. The name, the star rating, the address, the coordinates and the facility list are the supplier's own record for hotel 8605127; the distances are measured from those coordinates to Piața Unirii. Nobody pays to appear here and there is no commission ranking.

What we have written ourselves — the quarters, the guides, the things to do — is on the rest of the site, and it is written from the ground. This page is a catalogue entry, and says so.
