02 · December 1989

Twelve days that
ended a regime

It started with an eviction order for a pastor in Elisabetin and finished with a country without a dictator. Every address below is walkable from Piața Victoriei — most carry a plaque you would otherwise pass straight by.

16 Dec Elisabetin A crowd gathers outside a Reformed church on Timotei Cipariu to stop the eviction of pastor László Tőkés. By nightfall it is a march, not a vigil.
17 Dec Piața Victoriei The protest reaches the boulevard and the cathedral steps. The army is ordered to fire. Dozens die; bodies are taken to Bucharest and cremated.
18 Dec Cetate The city is sealed. Students hold the cathedral steps with candles. Word gets out by phone and across the Yugoslav border, 40 km away.
19 Dec The factories The plants strike — Elba, UMT, the shoe works. A workers’ city stops, which is the moment the regime loses the argument.
20 Dec Opera balcony A hundred thousand people fill Piața Victoriei. From the Opera balcony, Timișoara declares itself the first free city in Romania.
21 Dec The country Cluj, Sibiu, Bucharest follow. The Timișoara news is no longer containable.
22 Dec Bucharest Ceaușescu flees the Central Committee by helicopter. A week earlier, none of this looked possible.

The Bega,
west to east, by boat

A canal running the whole width of the city, a path on both banks and a public waterbus that actually runs. Six stops, forty minutes end to end, and the flattest good cycle in western Romania.

Spring April and May are the city at its best: blossom on the Bega, terraces out, the Rose Park opening. Rain comes in short heavy bursts.
Summer Thirty degrees on a treeless plain. Mornings in the squares, afternoons in the Green Forest or on the water, evenings everywhere.
Autumn September and October: Recaș harvest, warm light on ochre facades, rates still reasonable before the festival season.
Winter Fog and grey, then the December commemorations and a Christmas market in Piața Victoriei that is genuinely for locals.

The city the lamps built

It has been lighting itself for show since 1884, and it never stopped. Terraces until midnight in Cetate, three theatres at eight, string lights over half of Piața Unirii and a Christmas market that the whole county comes to.

Asked before
every trip

For three or four nights, yes. The historic core is one flat kilometre of Baroque and Secession squares, there are three state theatres in three languages, and the food is Banat — Hungarian, Serbian and Swabian at once. Most visitors pair it with Recaș wine country or the Banat mountains rather than with Transylvania, which is five hours east.

Two days cover the three squares, the Art Museum in the Baroque Palace and the Museum of the Revolution. A third day buys Fabric and Iosefin — the quarters where people actually live — and a fourth gets you out to Recaș, Buziaș or the Bazoș arboretum.

Not in the city. Trams and trolleybuses cover everything inside the ring and the core is walkable end to end in twenty minutes. A car only pays for day trips into the Banat plain and the mountains, where buses are slow and infrequent.

Medians checked September 2026: about €55 a night for a three-star double in Cetate, €45 in Iosefin, €75–95 for four-star in the centre. Rates jump during the Capital of Culture legacy festivals and the December commemorations, and drop hard in January and February.

Late April to mid-June, then September to mid-October. July and August sit around 30°C with little shade in the squares. December is cold and grey but the commemorations and the Christmas market in Piața Victoriei are the most Timișoara thing you can see.

Yes, including at night in the centre. The usual city rules apply around the railway station in Iosefin after midnight. Tap water is drinkable.

The revolution began on 16 December 1989 outside a Reformed church in Elisabetin and moved to Piața Victoriei, where crowds were fired on. On 20 December Timișoara declared itself the first free city in Romania, two days before Ceaușescu fled Bucharest. The Museum of the Revolution, the memorial in Piața Victoriei and the plaques around the Opera balcony are the places to see it.

Traian Vuia airport (TSR) is 12 km north-east with low-cost flights from a dozen European cities; the bus into town takes 35 minutes. Belgrade is 150 km, Szeged 120 km and Budapest under four hours by road, which makes Timișoara an easy first or last stop on a longer Central European route.
