Day one
The three squares
Everything on day one is inside Cetate, so leave the tram card in your pocket. The order matters: start at the oldest square while the light is still low and the terraces are empty.
09:00
Coffee on Piața Unirii
North side, under the pastel row. Fill a bottle at the mineral fountain like everyone else.
12 lei
10:00
Baroque Palace — Art Museum
Banat collection and the Baba room. Ninety minutes is right; two hours if you like nineteenth-century portraits.
20 lei
12:00
Piața Libertății
Old town hall, built over a Turkish bath. Five minutes and a photograph — this is a passing-through square.
Free
13:00
Lunch off Piața Victoriei
Papricaș with mămăligă at one of the places on Strada Alba Iulia, not on the boulevard itself.
55 lei
15:00
Orthodox Cathedral and the memorial
The cathedral steps, then the 1989 memorial. Read it now; the museum tomorrow will make sense of it.
Free
19:00
The Opera
Whichever of the three companies is playing. Buy ahead — one house, three theatres, and locals go.
30–90 lei
Day two
1989, then the working quarters
A heavier morning and a lighter afternoon. The museum is small but it takes something out of you, so the brewery and Piața Traian afterwards are deliberate.
09:30
Muzeul Revoluției
Strada Oituz. An hour for the rooms, ninety minutes with the film.
Free
11:30
Ruta de decembrie pe jos
Elisabetin to the Opera balcony, eleven plaques. Ends where you started yesterday, which is the point.
Free
13:30
Lunch in Iosefin
The market quarter around the station: langoși, a bakery, a coffee standing up.
25 lei
15:30
Fabric and the brewery
Tram 1 across the Bega. Timișoreana has brewed here since 1718; the tour runs afternoons.
40 lei
18:00
Piața Traian
The old Fabric square, faded and busy. Best terrace hour in the city.
30 lei
Day three
River, roses and the forest
The local day. If the waterbus is running, take it in one direction and cycle or walk back along the opposite bank.
09:30
Parcul Rozelor
Rose park on the south bank, planted 1891. Peak bloom late May into June.
Free
11:00
The Bega by boat
Public waterbus west to east, six stops, forty minutes end to end.
5 lei
12:30
Muzeul Satului Bănățean
Seventy relocated farmsteads in the Green Forest. Two hours, more with children.
15 lei
15:30
Bastionul Theresia
Back in Cetate: brick casemates, workshops and the last coffee.
Free
