Electronic Ticketing and Fares
Timișoara's public transport is run by STPT, the local transport authority. The system uses an electronic card called the 'Cardul de Transport' which you can top up at kiosks, machines, or online. Paper tickets are also available from kiosks but must be validated on board. The electronic card is the easiest option for visitors staying more than a day.
First step
Buy a Card
Go to a STPT kiosk at the central railway station, Piața Libertății, or Piața Victoriei. You need ID (passport works). The card itself costs 10 lei, non-refundable, and you load credit onto it.

Top Up
Load credit at the same kiosks, at ticket machines near major stops, or via the 24pay app. Minimum top-up is 10 lei. You can also buy a day pass for 15 lei or a 7-day pass for 50 lei.

Validate
When you board, tap your card on the orange validator near the doors. A single journey is valid for 60 minutes from validation. If you change trams within that time, tap again but you won't be charged extra.

Inspect
Inspectors in plain clothes or uniform randomly check cards. If you haven't validated, the fine is 100 lei on the spot. They accept card payment. Always validate, even if the tram is crowded.

Lines 1–3
The Core Network
Lines 1, 2, and 3 are the backbone of the tram system. They run frequently, every 6–10 minutes during the day, and connect the main railway station (Gara de Nord) with the city centre and the eastern districts. These lines are useful for most visitors because they pass through Piața Victoriei and Piața Libertății.

Gara de Nord to Piața Libertății
Runs from the main railway station through Bd. Republicii, past the Iulius Mall, to Piața Libertății. Useful if you arrive by train and want to reach the centre quickly.

Line 2
Gara de Nord to Piața Traian
Similar to Line 1 but continues east to Piața Traian, near the Fabric district. Good for the Bega canal and the Timișoreana brewery.

Line 3
Gara de Nord to Elisabetin
Heads south through the centre to the Elisabetin neighbourhood, passing close to the Orthodox Cathedral and the Roses Park.

Frequency
Every 6–10 minutes
During peak hours (7–9am, 4–6pm) trams run every 6–8 minutes. Off-peak, every 10–12 minutes. On Sundays, every 15 minutes.

Lines 4–6
Reaching Attractions
Lines 4, 5, and 6 serve more specific areas and are handy for tourists. Line 4 goes to the Giroc area, not very touristy, but Line 5 is useful for the Victor Babeș University and the medical campus. Line 6 connects the centre with the Aradului district and the large Shopping City. But the most useful for attractions is Line 4 to the Village Museum, though it requires a walk.

Piața Libertății to Calea Șagului
Goes south towards the Șagului district. Get off at 'Piața Șagului' for the open-air Village Museum (Muzeul Satului Bănățean), a 10-minute walk.

Piața Victoriei to Calea Aradului
Runs west along Calea Aradului. Useful for the Regional Business Center and the university campus. Not a major tourist line but good for accommodation in that area.

Line 6
Piața Traian to Shopping City
Connects the eastern Fabric district with the large Shopping City Timișoara. Good for rainy days or if you need supplies.

Line 7
Piața Libertății to Dâmbovița
Runs to the northern neighbourhoods. Not usually needed by visitors, but it passes near the Bega river and the central park.

Lines 8–9
Neighbourhood Lines
Lines 8 and 9 are less frequent and serve the outer districts. They are useful if you are staying in a neighbourhood like Freidorf or Mehala. These lines run every 15–20 minutes and are less crowded. They connect with the core network at Piața Libertății or Gara de Nord.

Gara de Nord to Freidorf
Goes south to the Freidorf industrial area. Not for tourists, but useful if you have business there. The tram stops near the Freidorf market.

Piața Libertății to Mehala
Runs northwest to the Mehala district. Passes through residential areas. The Mehala market is a good stop for local produce.

Frequency
Every 15–20 minutes
These lines are less frequent. Check the timetable at the stop or on the STPT app. They run from 5:00 to 22:30.

Operating Hours and Frequency
Trams run from early morning to late evening. The first trams leave around 4:20 on weekdays and 5:00 on weekends. The last trams depart between 22:30 and 23:30 depending on the line. Night buses replace trams after midnight on some routes, but they are less frequent. Always check the last tram time for your line to avoid being stranded.

After tram hours, night buses (lines N1, N2, etc.) run on some routes. They require the same ticket. Frequency is every 30–60 minutes.

Practical Advice for Riders
Using the tram system is straightforward once you have a card. But a few tips will make your journey smoother. Trams can be crowded during peak hours, so keep an eye on your belongings. The STPT app is useful for real-time arrivals. And remember that you must validate your card even if you have a pass.
